Quick Facts
What It Is: Café FEMENINO (Spanish for "feminine coffee") refers to coffee produced by women farmers through a certification program that supports women coffee growers.
Where I Got It: The Bardo coffee shop in Lakewood - $20
What Kaladi Says: Medium body and soft with a nut-like aroma.
Fun Fact
The Bardo kept this coffee in a freezer/refrigerator, which is a nice touch—not every coffee shop does that to preserve freshness.
The Brew - Two Different Perspectives
If you like Starbucks espresso, this definitely feels like a medium roast compared to that, and you will like this.
For my taste, as someone who is much more of a modern medium roast fan, this tastes burnt. What predominantly comes through when I taste it is the roast rather than the coffee. It is very dark.
Who This Is For
Now having said all that, if you like something which is much more heavily roasted—such as a typical Starbucks roast, a typical Peet's roast, or a typical roast that you would find at any of the large commercial coffee shops—this is going to be a step back from that darkness.
This makes it a good entrée into modern medium roast. It's kind of like a stepping stone. This is less dark than Starbucks and commercial roasts, but it is definitely way darker than a modern medium roast, even though it describes itself as "medium bodied."
The Bottom Line
If you're trying to transition from dark commercial roasts to lighter, more nuanced coffees, this Kaladi Mexico Chiapas could be your bridge. Just know that "medium body" here doesn't mean modern medium roast—it's still on the darker side.
