Huck Bom Senso Latin America Dark Roast

Quick Facts

Where I Got It: Safeway - $18 for 12 ounces

What Huck Says: This is a rich roast and full-bodied seasonal coffee from Latin America for dark roast lovers.

First Impressions

When you open the bag, you can definitely smell that smoky flavor, and you can see a little bit of oil has come out on the beans—all the classic signs of a dark roast. But here's what's different about this dark roast: it's not a burnt dark roast.

The Brew

When you're actually brewing it and then cook up an Americano with it, it doesn't taste burnt. You just taste the coffee. This is in contrast to some of the ones by Starbucks where, although it's a very popular flavor, the predominant notes that come through are overcooked.

When you're having a Huckleberry Roasters dark roast (Huck stands for Huckleberry, by the way, even though they just go by "Huck"), it really does bring out the flavor in a nice way. The dark is not overwhelming.

My Take

I will say that I generally prefer a medium roast because I feel like you can get more of the flavor directly that way. Sometimes I actually like a very sweet espresso that comes out of a light medium roast or a light roast—it doesn't always come out that way, but sometimes I really enjoy that flavor.

But here's the thing: I actually really do enjoy this flavor. Even though I prefer a medium roast, this dark roast—because it's not burnt, because it's a quality roast—tastes very good. If you're a dark roast lover, this Huck Bom Senso is a solid choice. It delivers that bold, smoky character without crossing into burnt territory.
