5 Denver Coffee Shops Better Than Starbucks

By Reid 8 min read

Look, I get it. Sometimes people drink low-quality coffee not because they prefer it, but because finding something new takes too long.

You're on your way to work, Starbucks is right there, and you know exactly what you're getting—even if what you're getting is mediocre, overpriced coffee from a corporation that cares more about quarterly earnings than your cup.

But here's the thing: Denver has incredible local coffee shops with multiple locations that are just as convenient as Starbucks—and the coffee is so much better. You don't have to search for them anymore because I've done that work for you.

Why These Five?

Each of these shops has multiple Denver-area locations, so you can find them on your route. They all serve exceptional coffee, support local communities, and deserve your business way more than another corporate chain.

1. Vellichor Coffee Roasters

Vellichor Coffee Roasters offers a cozy, book-filled environment where you can actually relax and enjoy your coffee. They roast their own beans in Englewood and create a hospitable craft coffee experience that Starbucks could never replicate.

📍 Locations

Golden

720 Golden Ridge Rd, Ste D, Golden, CO 80401

Hours: Mon–Sun: 6:30 AM – 5:00 PM

Littleton

9956 W Remington Pl, Ste A-1, Littleton, CO 80128

Hours: Mon–Sun: 7:00 AM – 2:00 PM

Why it's better than Starbucks: House-roasted beans, cozy atmosphere with books everywhere, locally owned and operated, and coffee that actually tastes like coffee instead of burnt corporate mediocrity.

2. The Bardo

The Bardo is Denver's answer to late-night coffee—most locations are open until midnight. They serve Kaladi coffee, locally roasted in Denver, with a flavor profile that's mellow and balanced. Compared to Starbucks, it's smooth, not bitter, and actually enjoyable to drink.

📍 Locations

South Broadway (Main Location)

238 S Broadway, Denver, CO 80209

Hours: 6:00 AM – Midnight, seven days a week

Phone: 303-629-8331

Amenities: Free Wi-Fi, free parking, dine-in/takeout, public color laser printer

Wheat Ridge

Lakewood

3333 S Wadsworth Blvd, Unit C105, Lakewood, CO

Hours: 6:00 AM – 10:00 PM, seven days a week

3. Metropolis Coffee

With four Denver locations, Metropolis Coffee has neighborhood shops in some of Denver's best areas—Baker, Golden Triangle, LoHi, and RiNo. Each location has its own vibe, but they all serve consistently excellent coffee that blows Starbucks away.

📍 Locations

Golden Triangle

300 W 11th Ave, Denver, CO 80204

Hours: Mon–Fri: 6:30 AM – 5:00 PM | Sat–Sun: 7:00 AM – 5:00 PM

Why it's better than Starbucks: Four convenient locations across Denver's coolest neighborhoods, consistently excellent coffee, local ownership, and actual personality in each shop instead of corporate sterility.

4. Roostercat Coffee House

Roostercat is a woman-owned and operated coffee house in Capitol Hill with outdoor seating, fire pits, and specialty lattes. The atmosphere is unique, the coffee is fantastic, and you're supporting a local woman entrepreneur instead of a faceless corporation.

📍 Location

Capitol Hill

1045 Lincoln St, Denver, CO 80203

Hours:

  • Mon–Thu: 7:00 AM – 5:00 PM
  • Fri–Sat: 7:00 AM – 6:00 PM
  • Sun: 7:00 AM – 3:00 PM

Phone: 720-388-0356

Why it's better than Starbucks: Woman-owned, unique atmosphere with outdoor fire pits, specialty drinks you won't find anywhere else, and a genuine community feel that Starbucks can't fake with their "third place" marketing BS.

5. Whittier Cafe

Whittier Cafe is Denver's first African espresso bar and social justice cafe. Established in 2014 as Denver's "original woke cafe," they source coffee from African nations and create a community-focused atmosphere. The coffee is exceptional—I bought both their light roast and espresso roast bags, and both were 5/5 at home.

📍 Location

Whittier (Near Denver Zoo)

1710 E 25th Ave, Denver, CO 80205

Hours:

  • Mon–Thu: 7:00 AM – 7:00 PM
  • Fri–Sun: 7:00 AM – 8:00 PM

Phone: 720-550-7440

Why it's better than Starbucks: Authentic social justice values (not performative), African-sourced coffee beans, community-focused mission, cozy interior with a sunny patio, and coffee good enough to buy bags for home brewing.

Stop Settling for Starbucks

You don't have to drink mediocre coffee anymore. These five local Denver coffee shops are just as convenient as Starbucks—many have multiple locations, extended hours, and easy parking. The difference is that the coffee is dramatically better, and your money supports real people in your community instead of corporate shareholders.

Next time you're tempted to pull into that Starbucks drive-thru out of habit, try one of these instead. I promise you'll taste the difference—and you'll feel better knowing your money went to someone who actually gives a damn about your cup.
